Pear Cactus

November 3, 2010

Have you ever had the nerve to break off a piece of cactus and just bite into it?

If yes, your good, lol. If no me neither, lol.

But I did bite into a fruit with many names such as Pear Cactus, Tunas in Spanish, Cactus Fruit, and Prickly Pear. Well not literally bit into it. I cut it in half and bit the inside of this juicy fruit.
Wikipeida quotes, “Peeled carefully to remove the small spines on the outer skin before consumption. If the outer layer is not properly removed, glochids can be ingested, causing discomfort of the throat, lips, and tongue, as the small spines are easily lodged in the skin.”

The Pear Cactus skin is coarse and thick, not unlike an avocados and it ranges in color from yellow or orange to magenta or red. The inside is sweet and juicy with crunchy seeds throughout. But I hate have to bite down onto seeds every seconds. So what I did was squeeze the juice out into a cup and drank it. It tasted so good. Needed no sugar or anything. A feel fruit drink! Will I buy this fruit again. Surely will when I can think how to put it into one of my dish other than using it as a topping on yogurt or cereal or blended into a smoothie.
